Stepping onto the Amalfi Coast for the first time felt like entering a mythical world. Italy’s history, art, and architecture had always captured my heart, but Amalfi—with its breathtaking coastal views, charming towns, delicious cuisine, and rich culture—became my favorite place in the world. After graduating from university, I made it my mission to call the Coast home, and I’ve had the privilege of residing there for several years. As the first Italian-American to gain Italian citizenship in Atrani, one of the Coast’s most iconic towns, I’ve carefully crafted this five-day itinerary to help you experience the best this magical region has to offer.

Know Before You Go:
- Taxis: Expensive and prone to overcharging. A 15-minute ride in summer can cost at least €75. See the bottom for contact info for fair and reliable drivers.
- Buses: While scenic, they can be unreliable. The narrow, winding roads often lead to delays, so prepare for late arrivals.
- Tickets: Purchase bus tickets in advance through the “Unico Campania” app or at most tabaccherie.
- Driving: Amalfi’s roads are beautiful but dangerous for inexperienced drivers. Consider hiring a professional driver if needed.
- Parking: Limited and costly, typically around €35/day unless included with your accommodations.
- Ferries: My favorite way to travel—they’re comfortable, scenic, and efficient. Use Ferryhopper to book online or purchase tickets at the ports directly for a discount.
- Porters: Check with your accommodations if you’ll need help with luggage. Stairs are inevitable, and a hired driver isn’t responsible to help.

Day 1: Arrival in Amalfi:
Morning: Arrive via Naples International Airport or Salerno’s smaller airport (which is expanding through 2026). Both locations offer their own train stations, ferries, buses, and private transportation options to get you to your final destination, although navigating from Salerno is easier and faster being that it is a smaller city.
Afternoon: Check into your hotel and unwind after your journey. While Positano and Sorrento are popular, I recommend staying in Amalfi for its central location and easy access to taxes, buses, and ferries.
- Explore Amalfi: Unpack and relax at the free or private beaches while soaking in the stunning views.
- Visit St. Andrew’s Cathedral (Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea) – One of Amalfi’s most iconic landmarks, this stunning cathedral was built in the 9th century and is dedicated to Saint Andrew, whose tomb lies beneath it. Marvel at the blend of Romanesque, Arab-Norman, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, the intricate golden mosaics, and the striking bell tower that symbolizes Amalfi’s glorious history as a maritime republic. Don’t forget to cover your shoulders before entering this sacred site. (Can you tell I was an Art History major?)
- Shop in Amalfi at L’Altra Costiera—a gem of a store offering the most beautiful and unique pieces crafted by true artists. The owners, my good friends Rosella and Roberto, handpick each item, ensuring that every piece is a stunning work of art. L’Altra Costiera is the ideal place to find a meaningful and locally crafted souvenir to take home with you. Dinner: Dine at La Terrazza Duomo in the heart of Amalfi. Known for its high-quality seafood, this restaurant caters to those with refined tastes, and offers a beautiful view of the Cathedral.
Apperitivo: For those who prefer to take in breathtaking coastal views over a refreshing drink and a light snack rather than a seafood feast, Terraza 17 is an absolute must-visit. Perched high above the Amalfi Coast, this stylish bar and restaurant offers a panoramic setting that perfectly captures the magic of the coastline. Whether you’re sipping on an Aperol Spritz as the sun sets or indulging in a selection of local appetizers, Terraza 17 provides an unforgettable atmosphere where you can relax and soak in the beauty of Italy’s most scenic shores.

Day 2: Ravello Day Trip
Breakfast: Start your day at Pasticceria Pansa, famous for its “delizia al limone”, a lemon delight that showcases the extraordinary flavor of Amalfi’s legendary lemons. Even during World War II, the family business remained open despite the struggles of rationing and war. It is the only place that seems to slow down when seated at one of their tables amongst the hustle and bustle of the Amalfi Streets, making it a great place to enjoy “la dolce vita” and people watch!
Morning Activities:
- From Amalfi take a bus up to Ravello and visit the Villa Rufolo Gardens, renowned for their lush greenery and panoramic vistas.
- Stroll through Ravello’s charming streets and do some shopping.
Lunch: Enjoy a meal at Mimì’s, a beloved spot amongst locals. My favorite order is the Pizza Nerano with crispy zucchini, an Amalfi Specialty.

Afternoon Drinks and Dessert: Head to Villa Cimbrone Gardens and enjoy a drink while admiring the Terrace of Infinity.
Dinner: Consider taking an early bus back or arrange private transportation in advance to take you from Ravello to Maiori. There, you can enjoy a romantic dinner at Torre Normano, a charming restaurant set in an ancient watchtower that once protected the city from pirates. Today, it offers not only breathtaking views but also some of the finest cuisine on the Amalfi Coast.
Day 3: Boat Tours and Breakfast Recommendations
Morning:
- Embark on a boat tour from Amalfi or Atrani for an unforgettable coastal experience. For self-drive options, check out Click and Boat, with many rentals available in Minori. While there, don’t miss Sal De Riso, renowned for its delectable pastries, especially their famous panettone.
- If you’re looking for guided excursions with stops in Capri, you can book tours through Airbnb, directly at the Amalfi pier, or with my good friends at Atrani Rental Boats. For a hearty start to your day, head to Il Birecto in Atrani, one of the few spots offering American – or English-style breakfasts alongside delicious coffee and pastries.

Lunch:
- For private boat excursions, you can arrange to stop for lunch at Conca del Sogno or La Tonnarella in Conca dei Marini, both of which offer stunning views and exceptional meals. If your journey takes you to Capri, don’t miss Il Cantuccio, where you can enjoy delicious food paired with the lively experience of dancing on your chair during lunch!
- Few locals from the Amalfi Coast have ever visited the Blue Grotto in Capri. Accessing it can be a bit of a gamble, as it heavily depends on the sea’s conditions, and it often ends up being a significant investment of time. Instead, I recommend considering the equally stunning Green Grotto. It’s less crowded, just as breathtaking, and you can even swim through it! If you’ve booked a private boat excursion and the conditions permit, simply ask your captain to take you there—you won’t regret it.
- Another must-see stop on a private boat tour is the Fiordo di Furore, near Praiano. This iconic bridge and natural fjord is not only a breathtaking sight but also home to the annual international diving competition, making it a fantastic way to experience one of the Amalfi Coast’s hidden gems!

Evening in Atrani:
- End your day with dinner at Il Birecto, a local favorite praised for its excellent service and even better food. This charming restaurant has even been featured in films like The Equalizer and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
- After dinner, enjoy drinks at La Risacca while taking in the beautiful views of Atrani’s iconic clock tower.

Day 4: Positano, Partying, and Cooking Class
Morning:
- Pastry Pick-Up: Begin your day by picking up pastries to go at Savo or Pansa.
- Travel to Positano: Journey to Positano via ferry or bus and check into your accommodation.
Lunch:
- Enroll in a cooking class through the help of your accommodation or Airbnb to learn traditional Amalfi recipes and savor your homemade meal.
Evening:
- Wander through Positano’s vibrant streets, exploring the area and doing a little shopping.
- Enjoy an aperitivo (with a reservation) at stunning venues like Le Sirenuse.
- Dine at Chez Black, a renowned beachfront restaurant. Reservations are recommended.
- Dance the night away at Music on the Rocks, a nightclub set inside a cliff.

Day 5: Beaches and Capri
Morning/Afternoon:
- Relax at Positano’s beaches: Start your day by unwinding on one of Positano’s beautiful beaches. Renting a sunbed is a great way to enjoy the coastal views and crystal-clear waters.
- Visit Exclusive Beach Clubs: For a more private experience, consider taking a boat to renowned beach clubs such as One Fire Beach, Da Adolfo, or Arienzo Beach Club. These clubs offer a unique ambiance and are perfect spots to stay for lunch.
- Alternatively, take a ferry from Positano to the island of Capri for the day or night, known for its upscale shops, breathtaking sights, and natural beauty. The ferry ride is relatively short, making it a convenient day trip.
- For those spending the night in Capri, they can visit Taverna Anema e Core. It’s a legendary nightclub known for its lively atmosphere, live music, and traditional Neapolitan flair.
Note: For those heading directly back to Naples or Salerno, it is easier to take the morning ferry from Capri.
Other Options and Special Ideas

Historical Adventures: One of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve ever had was a Pompeii and wine-tasting tour I booked through Airbnb. When our original driver fell through, the incredible Airbnb host, Giuseppe stepped in to help us secure a replacement. The new driver picked us up in Atrani and took us directly to Pompeii, where we joined a fascinating guided tour of the ancient ruins.

Afterward, we headed to a charming winery nestled under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. There, we enjoyed a delightful wine tasting and a delicious lunch. But the real highlight came after when we saddled up and rode horses throughout the farm amidst breathtaking views of the volcano as our backdrop.
Everyone we encountered spoke English fluently, and their warmth and energy made the day even more special. I truly can’t recommend this experience highly enough—it was the perfect combination of history, wine, and adventure!

Family Adventures in Amalfi: When my entire family visited me in Amalfi for the first time, I wanted to create a truly unforgettable experience. That’s why I booked a private driver, Alfonso, from Amalfi Luxury Service—a choice I highly recommend to anyone exploring the Amalfi Coast. Incredibly knowledgeable of the Coast and it’s hidden gems, Alfonso picked us up in Atrani and took us on a seamless journey to Paestum, where we enjoyed a private tour of the remarkably preserved ancient Greek temples.
After exploring Paestum, we stopped for a delicious lunch at a buffalo mozzarella-making factory—a must-visit for foodies looking to savor authentic Italian flavors. The day became even more personal when Alfonso drove us to the charming town of Caggiano. There, we visited the church where my great-grandparents were married and the house where my great-grandmother grew up. It was truly an incredible day and I can’t thank Alfonso enough for giving my family back a piece of our history.
He was not only professional but also incredibly personable, funny, and fluent in English, making the entire trip smooth and enjoyable. If you’re planning a trip to Amalfi, Paestum, or beyond, hiring Alfonso from Atrani Luxury Service is a decision you won’t regret. His local expertise, hospitality, and attention to detail make him an exceptional choice for exploring southern Italy.

Walk in the Footsteps of Legends:Beyond its breathtaking views and charming villages, the Amalfi Coast is steeped in ancient mythology. According to legend, the Li Galli Islands—visible from Positano and shaped like a dolphin from above—were home to the enchanting sirens who lured sailors to their doom. Only Odysseus, bound to his ship’s mast, resisted their song and continued his fateful journey. Meanwhile, the famed Path of the Gods (“Sentiero degli Dei”) is said to be the very route the gods used to guide Odysseus to safety. This scenic trail, stretching from Agerola to Nocelle, offers unparalleled panoramic views, making it a must for adventure seekers and history lovers alike. Whether you’re retracing the steps of ancient heroes or simply soaking in the stunning landscape, this hike is an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend booking a tour with Enzo, a certified guide whose storytelling brings these ancient myths to life.
